We had an exciting few weeks keeping up to date with Euro 2020 and decided to organise a sweepstake beginning from the Round of 16.
Associate Paul Dolan and Mechanical Engineer Matthew Galletly had the pleasure of flying the flags for our offices.
The Round of 16 provided some great matches with some upsets to make things a little more interesting. After breezing through the group stages, Italy were forced into extra-time by Austria but eventually got the job done with a 2-1 win.
Wales were knocked out after suffering a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Denmark who continued to impress after each game.
In one of the best matches of the tournament, Spain beat Croatia 5-3 after extra time was needed when Croatia pulled back two late goals to equalise the score. Defending champions France were knocked out by Switzerland in a penalty shootout after the Swiss managed to score two late goals and equalise themselves.
England made history and booked their place in the Quarter-finals after a long wait for a major win over Germany.
The Quarter-finals also provided some great matches with Spain beating Switzerland on penalties and England easing past Ukraine 4-0.
Italy were back to their best and knocked out the number one ranked team in the world Belgium, whilst Denmark managed a 2-1 win over Czech Republic.
Spain were once again involved in a match of the tournament contender when they were beaten on penalties by Italy. An end-to-end match from start to finish that even non-football fans would have enjoyed. A shame that one had to lose.
England made history yet again and managed to beat Denmark to see them through to their first major final in 55 years. The game not as straightforward as the majority of fans expected though, with extra time needed to settle the score.
Unfortunately, football didn’t come home as Italy proved to be the better team with a dominant display after going behind in the opening minutes. A second half equaliser and a dramatic penalty shootout handed the azzurri their second European Championship.
Our Business & Finance Director Gemma Davies had the bittersweet pleasure of winning the sweep with Italy, though not all bad for the rest of the team as we did enjoy the morning after the final off to help shake off any dizzy heads!
