St Monica & St Richard Church, Liverpool

St Monica & St Richard Church, Liverpool

Project Overview

St Monica and Richard Church Bootle is a Grade 2* listed Church designed in the early 1930s by the Architect F X Velarde and opened in 1936.  A powerful design, much influenced by the Modern Movement of continental Europe, particularly the work of Dominikus Bohm in Germany. The massive tower has external sculpture by Herbert Tyson Smith. The interior has much bare brickwork, relieved by a more decorative sanctuary with a fine reredos with carved angels and a floating canopy. Pendant lighting was installed from the ceiling but due to changes over the years including the removal of the pendants and the installation of high level wall lights the lighting was not in keeping with the Churches character and was very difficult to maintain. Due to budget pressure it was decided to replace the main Nave lighting with pendants salvaged from another Church in the Archdiocese, and convert these to provide a more sympathetic colour appearance, colour rendering and efficient  light source. The refurbished units were suspended from new specially fabricated wall brackets to make any future maintenance and cleaning easier. A range of new spotlights and floodlights were also included in the refurbishment works together with special LED feature lighting to emphasise the beautiful reredos which is an original feature of the Church. A new emergency lighting installation was also part of the design brief in line with the Clients policy. As the Church is Grade 2* listed consultations with The Historic Churches Committee had to be undertaken to ensure all the lighting and associated equipment was specified and installed to have minimum aesthetic impact on the building. Working closely with the electrical contractor the project was completed on time and on budget and the response from the Parish Priest and his Parishioners has been very positive.
