The Crypt is the only part to be built of the uncompleted Cathedral designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1930. With its high barrel vaulted ceilings and dark brick work and contrasting grey granite, it gives some feel of the grandeur of the magnificent cathedral planned to stand above it. The electrical design obviously had to deal sympathetically with the building and the lighting in particular.
Specially commissioned pendants using the latest lamp and control gear while reflecting the reverence of the space were part of the design brief. Great care was taken when designing the cable routes to ensure that the impact was minimalised.
